We Happy Few

by Imogen Stubbs

“A comedy drama about an all-female theatre company touring Britain during the darkest days of World War Two.
While the men are fighting Hitler and the bombs are falling on London, a 'girls only' theatre company sets out in a battered 1920s Rolls-Royce to bring Shakespeare to a culture-starved Britain.
Inspired by the real-life Osiris Players, whose travelling productions during the War inspired many to take up the profession - Judi Dench to name but one.” – From Nick Hern Publishing.

Roles for seven women and two men.
Characters are:
Hettie Oaks, leader of the troupe
Flora Pelmet, co-founder of the troupe
Helen, alcoholic children's radio presenter and frustrated actress
Charlotte, Cockney tomboy, latterly Rosalind's girlfriend
Jocelyn, stage manager
Reggie Pelmet, Flora's cousin (male)
Gertrude, German Jewish refugee
Joseph Rosenbaum, Gertrude's son
Ivy, a working class girl, soon to be Joseph's girlfriend
Rosalind, new RADA graduate, Helen's daughter

There is great flexibility in the age range of each character with some limitations based on relationships.

Sept 5, 2014 – Emily Johnson/Catalyst bring their Bessie Award – winning performance installation, The Thank-you Bar to Grand Marais’ Arrowhead Center For The Arts Oct 24-25, 2014 as part of the fall season for the Grand Marais Playhouse. The Thank-you Bar first premiered in 2009 in Anchorage, Alaska, and has toured across the USA to wide acclaim, propelling choreographer Emily Johnson into the national and international spotlight as a visionary contemporary dance maker.  In 2014, Emily Johnson / Catalyst received a MN State Arts Board “Arts Touring” Grant to bring a series of performances and workshops to Grand Marais in 2014 -15.

THE THANK-YOU BAR is a performance/installation of dance, live music, storytelling and visual image, connecting ideas of displacement, longing, and language to history, pre-conceived notions, architecture, and igloo-myth.  Created and performed by choreographer Emily Johnson with composers/musicians James Everest and Joel Pickard. Featuring beadwork by celebrated artist Karen Beaver, costumes by Angie Vo and Kari Multz , lighting design by Heidi Eckwall and paper sculptures by Krista Kelley Walsh.  TYB touring performances include a companion concert by experimental music duo BLACKFISH (James Everest + Joel Pickard).

THE THANK-YOU BAR is an intimate performance experience intended to engage many levels of perception and expression. Through a sophisticated concept of theatrical space, unique and powerfully minimalist dancing, and a mulit-layered original soundscore, Johnson’s illusory – yet partly true – stories ride the confluence of truth and myth. Appropriate for ages 6 and up.  Seating limited to 20 per performance.

"...so delightfully fresh and invigorating, so new, that you want to shout about it from the rooftop and out windows so everyone can know about it...dazzlingly original..."                                                                                                                                                                       - This Week in New York (twi-ny.com)

"a stunning example of an emerging contemporary American aesthetic"
                                                                                    - Houston Chronicle
