First Baptist of Ivy Gap A poignant comedy by Ron Osborne.
April 25,26 28 and May 2-5

The play is described by Samuel French publishers: “During WWII, six women gather at the church to roll bandages and plan the church's 75th anniversary. Overseeing things is Edith, the pastor's wise-cracking wife who dispenses Red Cross smocks and witty repartee to Luby, whose son is fighting in the Pacific; Mae Ellen, the church's rebellious organist who wants to quit but hasn't the courage; Olene, who dreams of a career in Hollywood; Sammy, a shy newcomer with a secret; and Vera, an influential Baptist with a secret of her own. When Luby learns her son has been wounded, she confounds the others by blaming the vulnerable Sammy.
Twenty-five years later, our "First Baptist Six" reunite. Back to reconcile with Luby - whose son died of his wounds - is Sammy, whose own son is now in Vietnam; and Olene, whose flashy show business career will set the town on its ear. There to welcome them are Vera, her secret still safe; Mae Ellen, still rebellious and still looking for an escape; and Edith, whose biggest challenge isn't the church's upcoming centennial but revelations that shake relationships formed over a quarter of a century. With humor and pathos, these six very different women find comfort, forgiveness and redemption in each other.”

Grand Marais Summer Theater Festival

Showing in repertory weekends July 18 - August 11

Church Basement Ladies

by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke with music and lyrics by Drew Jansen. A musical comedy inspired by the books of Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson authors of the best-seller “ Growing Up Lutheran”.

July 18, 26, 28, Aug. 1, 3, 9 & 11

As described on the plays website, Church Basement Ladies is: A celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there, CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES, is a new musical comedy featuring four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1965. From the elderly matriarch of the kitchen to the young bride-to-be learning the proper order of things, we see them handle a record breaking Christmas dinner, the funeral of a dear friend, a Hawaiian Easter Fund Raiser, and, of course, a steaming hot July wedding. They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the Pastor on due course while thoroughly enjoying, (and tolerating) each other as the true "steel magnolias" of the church. Funny and down to earth, audiences will recognize these ladies as they witness the church year unfold from below the house of God.

CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES uses the renowned Scandinavian Lutheran humor writings of The Lutheran Ladies, Janet Martin and Suzann Nelson, authors of a host of humorous books the most famous being GROWING UP LUTHERAN. The script is by Jessica Zuehlke and Jim Stowell with music and lyrics by composer Drew Jansen, who gave us the music for the popular long-running hit musical, HOW TO TALK MINNESOTAN, THE MUSICAL.

The Odd Couple (Female Version) by Neil Simon

July 19, 21, 25, 27, Aug. 2, 4, 8 & 10

This hilarious comedy by one of America’s funniest playwrights. Samuel French publishers description: Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon's hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of The Odd Couple. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same.
