Do You Want to be a part of the performance?

Emily Johnson is an Alaska-born choreographer and dancer based in Minneapolis, who creates and performs unique contemporary performances with her company, Emily Johnson / Catalyst. One of the hallmarks of Catalyst's work is finding unique ways to engage with local audiences and communities where they tour to.

For their dance piece called "Niicugni" (nee-CHOOG-nee - a Yup'ik word that means "listen" or "pay attention"), Emily wanted to create an experience that allowed audiences to notice and pay attention to things they might not have seen before - hidden details, subltle moments - that can shift the ways we relate to ourselves, our lives, and each other. One way this is achieved in the show is to have a few small groups of local community members who share a vocation make very brief appearances on stage (30 seconds) to make a gesture that stems from that vocation, at select moments during the dance. Emily works with each group to find the gesture and direct the short excerpt. For example, in New Hampshire, the group of beekeepers walked on stage in the same way they approached a hive - smelling, listening, watching closely for important information. The water aerobics class members all imagined the moment when they first enter the pool at their YWCA in Minneapolis. The Farmers and Gardeners in Tallahassee made a planting gesture into the stage floor.

Being part of a Local Group in Niicugni is an immensely rewarding experience that allows those audience members a chance to get more deeply involved and connected to this performance experience, and allows the piece to truly reflect some of the people and culture of the communities where it is performed. After touring Niicugni across the USA for 2 years, it has become clear that participants are always very glad they joined the show. Parents have brought children (age 3 and up) to be in groups. No performance experience necessary, in fact it is a role for non-performers.

the commitment required for participants is simply two evenings - for the dress rehearsal and the show, 3 hours on both Friday and Saturday, 6-9pm at the ACA Theater.

Friday Feb 6, 6-9pm Dress Rehearsal
Saturday Feb 7 6-9pm Full Show

All participants receive a free ticket for the performance, as well as one comp ticket for a friend or family member. Participants sit in the audience and watch the entire show, getting up from their seats only for their brief appearance onstage.

If you are interested in joining Emily Johnson / Catalyst for this very special performance of Niicugni at ACA, please contact julia bither at julia@catalystdance.com for more information and details.
